What is social media?

Social media is a type of website that supports communication and sharing between people, businesses, and/or organizations. One hallmark of most social media sites is user-generated content that is available to anyone with an internet connection. Some popular social media websites include Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and blogs, but there are many others, and more appear every day.

Why is social media important to small businesses and non-profit organizations?

Social media allows companies to build relationships with customers by sharing their message in a less formal setting, connecting in a two-way dialogue in nearly real-time. Customers can help promote a business with user-generated content such as comments, feedback, and recommendations to friends. Social media offers companies the ability to manage their online reputation, giving them a way to express their perspective on an event or address negative experiences by responding appropriately.

Social media use has increased significantly in recent years. Some impressive statistics:

    • Social networking now accounts for 22% of all time spent online in the US.1
    • The number of social media users age 65 and older grew 100 percent throughout 2010, so that one in four people in that age group are now part of a social networking site.2
    • Facebook is used by 57% of all American adults and 73% of all those ages 12-17.  64% of adult Facebook users visit the site on a daily basis. 5  Facebook had 1.28 billion monthly active users as of March 31, 2014.3
    • Facebook tops Google for weekly traffic in the U.S.4
    • YouTube is the 2nd largest search engine in the world.4
